Long-running tension in the Cape Town township of Mfuleni boiled over late last night when 150 protesters set alight a local fire station and community hall.
Protestors also looted the home of the area’s ANC ward councillor, Themba Honono.
This morning Honono’s home was littered with debris including a overturned fridge in the driveway. The site was cordoned off.
“The house has been totally destroyed, contents looted and the car damaged. Nobody was at home when it happened. No injuries were reported,” said JP Smith of the city’s safety and security directorate.
The drawn-out struggle for serviced sites in Ward 108 in Mfuleni has led to allegations of mismanagement against Honono.
City Press contacted him for comment this morning but he hung up.
Tyres and tar poles were used to set fire to the community hall and fire station last night – and at 10pm fire station staff and equipment were moved to nearby Belhar for safety.
Three fire engines and a firefighter’s private car were damaged.
The police are on high alert following the protest.
News24 has reported that MEC for Human Settlements in the Western Cape, Bonginkosi Madikizela, has agreed to meet with unhappy community members within the next few days.
