DA mayoral candidate in Johannesburg Herman Mashaba has urged people to grab the “once in a lifetime opportunity” and vote DA.

Mashaba spoke at a media briefing held in Joburg today and aimed at exposing financial failings by the City of Joburg under mayor Parks Tau’s administration.

“The people of Johannesburg have an important decision to make on 3 August. They must choose between five more years of soaring unemployment or be active participants and recipients in a new vision under the DA government,” said Mashaba.

Mashaba said the current ANC government was keeping its powers through taking advantage of the poor. “He [Jacob Zuma] hates clever blacks. One thing for sure is that he is not going to succeed with that project of keeping us, black people, ignorant,” he vowed.

Some of the things Mashaba highlighted at the press briefing were:

» R68 billion electricity infrastructure backlog

» Increasing unemployment rate (from 27% to 31% during Tau’s term in office)

» Maladministration

» Corruption

» Billing complaints

Mashaba emphasised that, under his administration, the DA will root out corruption and ensure that individuals with necessary skills and experience are appointed to exercise financial discipline.

“One thing I refuse to do is to emulate the Zumas and the Malemas. I don’t want to be a politician like that. I want to become a public servant.

“I’m not prepared to lie to anyone. I have been brought up to have values in life and values of integrity to me are very crucial,” concluded Mashaba.
