Hlaudi Motsoeneng has been appointed as the general executive for corporate affairs at the SABC – and plans on reapplying for his old job of chief operations officer.

The new position was announced by chairperson of the SABC, Professor Mbulaheni Maghuve, at an urgent media briefing held this afternoon at the SABC’s Auckland Park offices in Johannesburg.

Maghuve said the SABC had adhered to the recommendations made by the Public Protector to institute a disciplinary hearing against the former acting chief operations officer and he was cleared of any wrongdoing.

As a result, Motsoeneng was now eligible to apply for the vacant permanent position of chief operations officer.

“I am going to apply for the job, it’s a given. And I qualify!” he told the media.

Dressed in a blue hat and black suit, Motsoeneng was in good spirits about his appointment, and said he was excited about taking up his new position.

“This new look is because I’m moving to a new position. When there is dark I see light. The media, you are now my partner. Part of my role is to manage stakeholders and we are going to have fun with you,” he said.

James Aguma, acting group chief executive, said that Motsoeneng’s new role would include “dealing with stakeholders and overlooking operations in provinces as well as affairs related to marketing”, referring to the efforts by Motsoeneng towards increasing the revenue for the public broadcaster.

Aguma emphasised the need for transformation at the SABC and that “it is the agenda”.

In true Motsoeneng fashion, he metaphorically emphasised the distribution of chocolate cake towards all nine provinces and that “all 11 languages will be catered for”.

Over the weekend, City Press reported that Motsoeneng was awarded R11.4 million in bonuses. He declined to comment.
