Security companies expect cash-related crime to pick up over the long weekend.
“With the weekend falling over pay day, shoppers are cautioned to carry as little cash as possible in their handbag or pockets,” said Wahl Bartmann, chief executive of Fidelity Security Group.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo, said there is no way of predicting increases in crime over this long weekend but the police are prepared to respond to whatever crime that may occur.
“We have measures put in place to counter whatever threats that may come up,” said Naidoo.
Statistics from Cash Connect, a cash management solutions provider, show that 54 armed robbery attacks occur in South Africa each day.
The South African Police Service said they are also working closely with the department of health, the traffic department and have activated their drug units in preparation to respond to anything that may occur over the weekend.
Naidoo said these efforts are also part of their crime control strategy for the December festive season.
Whether crime will increase, decrease or stay the same, it is worth noting these tips to avoid being targeted this weekend:
1. Carry only those credit cards that are necessary when shopping.
2. Do not carry your pin numbers in your wallet or purse - leave them in a secure place at home.
3. If you use public transport, it is a good idea to check the timetable ahead of your trip to the shops so that you don’t have to wait too long at a bus stop or train station.
4. Do not leave your purse or other valuables in plain sight or unattended in your vehicle.
5. When possible, walk to your car with someone. Alternatively, ask a store employee to walk with you to your car, especially after dark.
