The Democratic Alliance’s youth league has officially laid charges against ANC Youth League president Collen Maine for inciting violence at a rally that was held on Saturday.
DA Youth chairperson, Yusuf Cassim laid the charges at the Sunnyside Police Station in Pretoria at midday.
“We have opened a case against Collen Maine for the incitement of violence and we have been assured by the police that the matter will be investigated,” he told City Press.
This came after the ANC Youth League president, who is popularly known as “Oros”, called on MK veterans to take up arms for President Jacob Zuma.
“We contend that these remarks are highly incendiary and are at direct odds with the principles of a non-violent society as envisaged by our Constitution,” Cassim said.
The case is expected to be moved to the eThekwini region, where the remarks were uttered.
“A new case number will be issued once the case is moved there because that is where the incident took place,” Cassim said.
Yesterday Maine told City Press that he apologised for his remarks and that he had retracted his statement after being briefed by members of the ANC.
Spokesperson for the ANC, Zizi Kodwa, condemned his remarks and said that the governing party did not endorse his views.
“Incitement of violence is a very serious crime that goes against the spirit and intent of our Constitution, and the principle of the rule of law. In keeping with these key constitutional principles, it is essential that this results in a full investigation. It cannot be washed away or undone,” Cassim said.
