Nene says he is going back to Parliament as MP

accreditation

Nhlanhla Nene will return to Parliament as an ordinary MP.

Nene spoke to Media24 this morning, in the aftermath of President Jacob Zuma’s announcement last night that Nene was being replaced as minister of finance.

Zuma said that Nene would be replaced by Des van Rooyen, and ANC MP and former mayor of the Merafong municipality, and Nene would be deployed to “another strategic position”.

There was speculation that Nene could be moved to the Brics bank, but he denied these rumours.

“I am going back to Parliament,” he said.

Nene denied that he would be filling a senior role – such a chairperson of a parliamentary portfolio committee – at Parliament

“I am going back not in any capacity other than an MP.”

He wouldn’t give any details about the reasons for the move, saying: “It was the president’s call.”
