The Reds put in a strong second-half performance to beat the Cheetahs 30-17 in their Vodacom Super Rugby clash in Brisbane yesterday.
The teams were deadlocked at 10-all at half-time.
The Reds scored three tries through Curtis Browning and scrum half Nick Frisby.
Fly half Jake McIntyre converted all three five-pointers and added three penalties.
The Cheetahs replied with tries by flank Uzair Cassiem and wing Raymond Rhule. Fred Zeilinga added both conversions and a penalty.
While the Reds were reduced to 14 men on two separate occasions, the Cheetahs are likely to be on the receiving end of a postmatch citing after a swinging arm by flank Paul Schoeman to the head of Reds loose forward Hendrik Tui went unpunished.
The Reds picked up four points for their victory, but stayed
fourth in the Australian Conference and ninth in the Australasian Group.
The Cheetahs left empty-handed, but remain third in the Africa Conference 1 and fifth in the South African Group.
Meanwhile, the Vodacom Bulls broke a four-year drought in Australia by beating the Western Force 42-20 in sparkling fashion in their Super Rugby match in Perth on Friday.
The Bulls won for the first time in three years in the Antipodes, their last win coming against the Blues in 2013, and before that they won in 2012 against the Waratahs.
But while those records are something from a more glorious past, this Bulls side produced a performance worthy of taking note of, scoring five tries to two away from home and laying down a marker for the rest of their Australian tour.
With the win, they pulled level with their conference rivals, the DHL Stormers, although the Stormers will play one game extra against the Waratahs on Saturday.
However, it brings into question the strength of the Australian conference, since their top side has a negative points difference at the moment and the Force haven’t won any of their past five games.
