Tonight Mamelodi Sundowns will have a chance to narrow the gap between themselves and log leaders Kaizer Chiefs to only four points.
Second-placed Sundowns are playing away in Cape Town where they meet Stellenbosch at Athlone Stadium.
Sundowns can now smell blood after Chiefs dropped three points at the weekend when they lost 1-0 to AmaZulu at home.
Masandawana know that a victory in Cape Town will pile pressure against Amakhosi, as the team from Chloorkop still with a game in hand after tonight’s fixture.
Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has acknowledged that it won’t be an easy assignment against Stellies.
After being dumped out of the CAF Champions League, Downs are now fighting on only two fronts with just the league and the Nedbank Cup to play for.
“We are back to the story of three tournaments in six or seven days,” said Mosimane ahead of tonight’s clash.
He was referring to last Saturday’s CAF Champions League game against Egyptian giants Al Ahly and the Nedbank Cup game against Highlands Park this coming Saturday.
“Stellenbosch is a difficult team to play and their position on the log (11th) says a lot as they are not fighting relegation for now. They have done exceptionally well and you can never take them for granted,” Mosimane said.
The Stellies team are full of fighters he said.
“They gave us a scare in the first round when we had to come back from behind to beat them.”
Mosimane’s only worry ahead of the game is how his players respond after being knocked out of the continental competition.
“They (Stellenbosch) are fresh and we just played a big game against Al Ahly where we gave our all. I just hope our players’ bodies are right and they have recovered physically and mentally,” he said.
Mosimane added that they had casualties from the weekend game and the likes of Denis Onyango and Gastón Sirino would face a late fitness test before the game.
The game kicks off at 7.30pm
