In 2015, hip-hop artist Cassper Nyovest made history by becoming the first local artist to sell out tickets for the Ticketpro Dome in Joburg. It was a celebratory event, cementing the popularity of hip-hop in this country and proving that local artists have serious financial clout.
Cassper Nyovest: Fill Up the Dome sees him taking us behind the scenes while preparing to fill up this massive arena.
It starts off with a scene of Nyovest rolling out of bed and getting scooped up by a Rolls-Royce Phantom that has stars on the ceiling. I dig this – a young flex nyana, plus it isn’t tricking if you got it.
The producers lather a thick coat of drama on the scene where Nyovest is about to take to the stage, which is clever. The dramatic music makes you feel a little nervous and feel like something greater than what you’re about to watch is going to happen.
I can hate all I want, as the streets love this man. Thousands of people followed his commands and sang his lyrics verbatim. All I really want to see is his rhyming off the dome, I’m not too bothered by his filling it.
This is basically a live recording, which is cool, but I was expecting a little more. Why not have him walk the viewer through the hidden aspects of putting on a production of this size and perhaps give some shine to his team? Including a character arc helps, even when documenting real-life events.
Show a few stressful situations the subject overcame for the goal to be realised to add tension and suspense. The documentary is a cool idea, but they could’ve ramped things up for the cameras.
The actual show does, however, pack some punch and perhaps the budget was funnelled towards making this show a cultural moment that will live on in the memory of those who were present.
