'Removing Rhodes Memorial will be a more difficult issue'

accreditation

The Centre for Conflict Resolution hosted a public dialogue in Cape Town last week, debating the legacy of Cecil Rhodes. Guest speaker, Emeritus Professor of History at Rhodes University Paul Maylam, joins us in studio to discuss the public view. Watch.

Prof. Maylam has worked in the field of South African urban history for many years, with a focus on apartheid. Author of 'The Cult of Rhodes' - Maylam himself is said to be no admirer of Rhodes and his approach to the subject in his book is both ironical and critical, where he sets out to address the paradox of why such an unappealing person should have been so venerated and commemorated.

Students at UCT baying for the removal of a statue of Cecil Rhodes on campus has sparked a nationwide debate around Rhodes' legacy in Southern Africa and issues of transformation in South African universities.

Maylam is currently working on a publication on the history and legacy of Rhodes University.
