Two videos posted on Facebook by the Intelligence Bureau SA shows a cash-in-transit heist involving an armoured vehicle on the N12 highway near Rondebult Road. The attackers fled the scene empty handed after police responded to the incident.
Video footage from a drone shows the attackers attempting to steal cash from the vehicle, moments before police arrive at the scene. Another video posted shows an explosion from the vehicle.
G4S Cash Solutions South Africa has confirmed that one of their armoured cash-in-transit vehicles was attacked by a group of armed robbers on Saturday while travelling on the N12 highway between the Atlas Road and Rondebult Road off-ramps.
According to a G4S spokesperson, a large gang of robbers opened fire on the vehicle which brought it to a standstill. The staff on board were then forced out of the vehicle. "One of our employees sustained injuries but is in a stable condition after having received treatment in hospital. Thankfully, there were no fatalities during this attack."
"Due to the rapid response by law enforcement, the robbers were not able to gain access to the back of the vehicle despite attempting to do so with explosives. They fled the scene empty handed," the G4S spokesperson said.
The incident is still under investigation.
